Land Survey Technician – Sioux Falls, SD
McLaury Engineering is currently seeking a Land Survey Technician to join our growing land surveying group in Sioux Falls, SD. This position combines field surveying with office-based data processing and CADD drafting. It is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in building a long-term career in land surveying while gaining experience in the complete surveying process.
A Land Surveyor license or Land Surveyor-in-Training certification is not required. The ideal candidate will have an interest in pursuing LSIT certification and eventual licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor. This position provides the opportunity to learn and develop while working alongside two knowledgeable South Dakota-licensed Professional Land Surveyors.
Primary Responsibilities
As a Land Survey Technician, your responsibilities would include:
- Working with professional land surveyors, engineers, and technicians on a variety of boundary, topographic, construction, transportation, municipal, and private development projects
- Performing field survey work using robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, levels, and other surveying technology
- Completing topographic and existing-conditions surveys to support engineering design
- Providing construction staking for municipal, transportation, utility, and private development projects
- Assisting with boundary research, survey calculations, property surveys, subdivision plats, certificates of survey, easement exhibits, right-of-way plats, legal descriptions, and other survey documents
- Downloading, organizing, processing, and reviewing survey field data
- Preparing survey drawings, plats, maps, exhibits, and other documents using AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software
- Developing existing-conditions base drawings and digital terrain models to support civil engineering design
- Assisting engineers and CADD staff with the preparation of engineering drawings and plan sets for transportation, municipal, utility, and private development projects as needed
- Coordinating field data with CADD files and reviewing drawings for completeness and accuracy
- Maintaining survey equipment and helping ensure fieldwork is completed safely, accurately, and efficiently
- Coordinating with surveyors, engineers, contractors, property owners, and other project team members
- Developing the technical knowledge and practical experience needed to pursue LSIT certification and eventual licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor
Qualifications
- An associate or bachelor’s degree in land surveying, civil engineering, civil engineering technology, drafting technology, construction technology, or a related field is preferred but not required
- Previous land surveying, CADD drafting, construction staking, civil construction, or related experience is beneficial but not required
- An interest in pursuing LSIT certification and eventual licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor is strongly preferred
- A willingness to learn both the field and office aspects of professional land surveying
- Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, survey data collection software, GPS/GNSS equipment, or robotic total stations is beneficial
- Ability to understand maps, plans, measurements, and other technical information
- Strong attention to detail, organization, communication skills, and problem-solving ability
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry survey equipment and perform the physical activities associated with field surveying
- Willingness to travel to project sites as needed
- A valid driver’s license
